This is Phil’s 7th consecutive year of coaching junior girls. Last year, he coached the BRYC 14's National Team, and has coached 14's teams five of the previous six years.
As a coach, Phil emphasizes doing the right thing at the right time in the right way. He considers coaching to be a privilege and a terrific opportunity to help young players learn about volleyball skills, mental preparedness, leadership, communication, supporting teammates, and loving the game. He has great fun helping his players improve during the season and seeing their joy as they master new skills. Coaching 14's is especially enjoyable because the players are enthusiastic and improve so quickly. For 14s on the National Team, there is a tangible goal of playing high school varsity or junior varsity volleyball next fall.
Phil plays USAV adult mens B/BB volleyball with Greg McIntyre and is a member of a senior mens volleyball team that annually participates in the US Adult Open Volleyball Championships.
Phil will co-coach with Greg McIntyre and Caitlin Oshida (Phil's daughter). They coached the BRYC 14's National Cougars last year and look forward to coaching together again. All three coaches are of “one mind” when playing together, which makes for an effective coaching and teaching trio. Their goals are to help the girls love the game and acquire the skills needed to excel in volleyball.
Phil is part of a volleyball family. Phil and his wife of 35 years, Sandy, met while playing recreational volleyball at California State University Long Beach. They helped her develop the skills and love for the game that has provided her success in her volleyball career. Caitlin played three years for the Woodson High School Varsity team as a setter. She then went on to play at the University of Mary Washington as a defensive specialist. Today, Caitlin plays recreationally and enjoys sharing her love for the sport through coaching.

Vicky Wuerfel first started coaching for BRYC when her daughter, Alaina, was in the fourth grade. Coach Wuerfel has taken great pleasure in watching many of her players celebrating great varsity seasons as seniors this year. After three years with BRYC, Coach Wuerfel took time off from coaching to support Alaina through her busy club volleyball seasons. Coach Wuerfel is thrilled to be coaching again for BRYC, and she is looking forward to introducing Alaina to the joys of coaching volleyball, and watching her pass on some of her volleyball defensive expertise to the next generation of high school players.
Coach Wuerfel is both the freshman volleyball coach and an 8th grade English teacher at Lake Braddock Secondary School. She particularly enjoys introducing players to the skills of the game. As an educator, Vicky recognizes that all students have particular strengths in the classroom, and she knows this is also true of volleyball players, “Every player brings a particular strength to the court and to the team, and I truly enjoy discovering and promoting those individual strengths.”
Vicky started playing volleyball herself in 8th grade. She played competitive volleyball in Ohio and intramurals throughout college. She still enjoys playing for a woman’s league in Fairfax County.
Coach Wuerfel is VHSL certified and IMPACT certification.
Assistant Coach - Girls 14 Regional
Sarah started in the Robinson Volleyball Program as an 8th grader serving as a varsity manager with her best friend, Alaina. She was the starting JV setter as a freshman, and made varsity her sophomore year. As a senior, she has enjoyed being a co-captain and leader on the court as both a setter and right-side hitter. Her outstanding ‘setter-hands’ and 5’10” stature lend themselves well to a 5-1 offense.
Sarah played up a level at 14 as a Setter/RS on the 15U BRYC team for Coach Davis. She has also played for SYA and the NOVA Hokuleas. Additionally, Sarah has been a swim coach for two years for the Burke Centre Stingers 11/12s and 8U swimmers.
Sarah is excited to pass on all of the things her coaches have taught her. She can’t wait to teach the girls the critical leadership role a setter plays on the court. Sarah started playing at the age she will be coaching, so she thinks this also offers her some insights to share with her players, ”I had to catch up on my skills quickly compared with some of my teammates who had already been playing for years. I think this gives me a unique perspective that I can share with the girls.”
Sarah is hoping to attend James Madison University in the fall where she intends to play intramural volleyball.
Assistant Coach - Girls 14 Regional
As a senior at Robinson Secondary School, Alaina is wrapping up her third varsity season as libero and co-captain with best-friend and co-coach Sarah Miller. She was the MVP her freshman year on JV as a libero. Alaina started playing volleyball with BRYC in the 4th grade. She played for NVVA and then joined the NOVA Hokuleas when she was 14. She played for the Hokuleas through last spring, and ended her club career in Ohio last July at the Girls Junior National Championships! Alaina’s strong ‘softball’ arm allowed her to play as an outside hitter for the Hokuleas through her 15U season, but at 5’6”, she made the inevitable move to defensive specialist / libero for the past two years. The strong hitting arm still comes in handy as a back row hitter.
Alaina is looking forward to sharing her experiences about how great it is to be a part of a team with the girls. According to Alaina, “Offense is a lot of fun, but offense starts with a great pass or dig, and I want my players to really understand how important good ‘D’ is to a team. I can’t wait to teach the girls how to roll!”
Alaina is hoping to attend Virginia Tech next fall where she intends to try-out for their club volleyball team.
